Best of all, Apple uses the same port for USB 2.0 and 3.0, while the standard in the PC world is separate ports for each protocol. There are a lot of USB 3.0 drives on the market, and they are far more affordable than Thunderbolt drives. The USB 3.0 specification is over 10x as fast as USB 2.0 and has half the bandwidth of Thunderbolt. If you still can't get it to work are you able to get it to work in the HDD drive bay? Locate the Model ID within the System Report from within the About This Mac menu entry. OWC was good enough to document this issue which is why i point to their unit. It makes no difference who's optical drive carrier you use! You could be facing an issue from the logic board in this series. OWC does make a fixed speed SSD OWC - Mercury Electra 3G SSD which is one of the few fixed speed SSD’s still on the market. Sadly, while I personally love the Samsung EVO SSD’s it is a auto sense drive and won’t latch into the needed I/O SATA speed as such won’t work. If it still fails either try a second carrier in case yours is defective or not rated for SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) support or try a fixed speed SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive.

So if you have the i5 model you should be able to get the drive to work. Again, this is a MacBook Pro logic board issue not the carrier its self. Review this OWC - Data Doubler OWC Red note is a bit confusing as the Model listing does not point to the Red note at the bottom, yet the note its self lists the MacBookPro9,2 model. In your case the faster i7 model won’t work whereas the i5 model will! Same exact PCH just the difference in the clocking makes the difference! You see the PCH chip in some is not properly clocked so many SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drives won’t work properly. Apple has a known issue in many of their MacBook Pro’s.
